Everything is Proceeding as I Have Forseen...

(No, this is not a Fred Thompson post.)

Before the last WWDC, I half joked that I expected his Steveness to announce the completion of the clone army, officially known as ShockTroop Pro. Apparently, I misjudged what the next battlefield would be.

Today, iTunes started this morning selling DRM-free music.

And now, YouTube is coming to iTV.

Now, I might be able to convince ES1 to get one.

Next month, the iPhone comes out. At this rate, the clone army may be superfluous.

Mmmm... Burger...

For a fresh burger, you can't beat Zebb's. But I do have a sweet spot for a chain restaurant called Cheeburger, Cheeburger. They have a 20-ounce burger called the pounder (pound and a quarter, really). If you eat it all, they take your picture and put you on the wall.

Yum.

Lets go Buffalo aka see you next season boys

My beloved Sabres have lost Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals. It has been a wonderful and exciting season. Throughout this series I have maintained hope that my boys would make it over the hump and into the Finals. But they were thoroughly outplayed in the first three games of this series, a large hole to climb out of. Thank you for avoiding the sweep. You played your hearts out in the last two games.

Thank you Ryan Miller for making those incredible saves all year long.
Thank you Chris Drury for making so many clutch plays to keep us in the game (please stay with us).
Thank you Tim Connolly for being an inspiration coming back from that concussion.
Thank you Max Afinogenov for keeping it exciting.
Thank you Daniel Briere for being a leader (please stay here).
Thank you Brian Campbell, Thomas Vanek, Ty Conklin, Paul Gaustad, Jochen Hecht, Dmitri Kalinin, Ales Kotalik, Toni Lydman, Adam Mair, Teppo Numminen, Nathan Paetsch, Danile Paille, Andrew Peters, Jason Pominville, Derek Roy, Jaroslav Spacek, Drew Stafford, Henrik Tallinder, Dainius Zubris, all the guys called up from Rochester, Lindy Ruff and the coaching staff.

I will hang my 2006-2007 Sabres team picture with pride.

You have made this year a great one to be a hockey fan in Buffalo. And I can't wait until we make the run for the cup again next year.

An Update - Thank God

Last January I had a post where I ran through a list of several things I wanted to blog about. One of those items was about the Bike Path Rapist, who had been looming over the Buffalo area since the early 90s, raping and murdering women who ran along area bike paths. Back in January, the police made an arrest. Follow-up investigations lead to the release of a man Anthony Capozzi who had spent 20 years in prison after being convicted of rapes now connected to the man arrested as the Bike Path Rapist by DNA evidence. Mr Capozzi was released from prison.

According to this article in the Buffalo News, Altemio Sanchez, has confessed to three murders connected to the Bike Path Rapist: Linda Yalem (who has a memorial run named for her) 1990, Majane Mazur 1992, and Joan Diver 2006. It was Joan Diver's murder that allowed the police to find Sanchez. According to the article, Sanchez's lawyer wanted him to plead insanity, but Sanchez refused. For that I am grateful. Sentencing is going to be in August and he faces a possible 75 years to life. He is 48 years old.

He has saved the county several hundred thousand dollars and provided closure to the families of those three women.

Hope

The rekindling of hope doesn't often require much.

At the Battle of Cardassia, Cardassian forces switch sides, allowing the combined Federation, Klingon, and Romulan fleet to overwhelm the Dominion and force them to retreat.

At the Battle of the Ministry, Voldemort faces The Only One He Ever Feared, as the combined forces of the DA & the Order of the Phoenix send the death eaters scrambling.

At the Battle of Five Armies, the arrival of eagles turns the tide of battle against the orcs.

At the Battle of Endor, the capture of an AT-ST provides the leverage for the Ewok & Rebel forces to capture and destroy the Death Star's Shield Bunker.

And in Game 4 of the 2007 Eastern Conference Finals, the Buffalo Sabres score the first goal 9 seconds into the game.

The corpulent matron has not yet heard her cue.

Sitemeter, Go Fsck Yourselves

Yesterday, I saw a link from Little Green Footballs about SiteMeter. Following the link, I discovered that sitemeter is now installing a 3rd party cookie to track browsing. This 3rd party cookie constitutes spyware.

I'm a Mac user. As John Gruber's classic post points out, a bulk of the reason things are so better on the Mac side is that we don't put up with crap. Spyware, crapware, and things that just plain don't work are accepted as a fact of life on the Windows side. Mac users have higher standards.

Sitemeter can now go do anatomically improbable things to themselves. We're canceling our account. Check your cookies for specificclick. Tell your friends. Tell people whose blogs you read. Tell that guy with the axe who's standing right behind you.

A question.

I have read several articles about a heartbreaking story coming out of Portugal. A British couple was staying there in an apartment and apparently their oldest child, a three year old girl, was kidnapped. All of the stories that I had read were full of sympathy and pleas for the child's safe return.

I feel for these parents. I cannot imagine the pain that they are feeling and the fear that's coursing through them. But I can't seem to help noticing one thing that is mentioned in every single story. What follows is a quote from the article linked above:

"The McCanns had put her to bed and were dining 50m away with friends when she vanished from the unit where they were staying.

She was with her twin brother and sister, who were asleep when the parents returned and found that she was missing."

Am I missing something here? Are parenting rules different in Britian and Europe? Unless they're leaving someone out of the story, these people put a three year old and 2 year old twins to bed, and went to eat leaving them alone. According to this article, the restaurant they went to with friends was "within site of the apartment".

Who leaves a 3 year old and two 2 year olds alone? I don't care if the children were sleeping and the parent could see the apartment. They were going to dinner. This isn't walking outside for five minutes, this is at least an hour of time. What would have happened if any of the children woke up? Kids that age are curious and get in to all sorts of things. What would have stopped them from eating/drinking something dangerous?

I'm not saying the parents are to blame for the kidnapping, but am I the only one who views their actions that night irresponsible? I'm pretty sure if this happened in the US, the parents would be brought up on child endangerment charges.

Quick question

Does anyone have any numbers on patients presenting to local EDs with chest pain after a Sabres games? Because I was getting so worked up in the last two games, especially tonight's 2-1 win that I thought I was having an MI. Just curious.

Go Sabres!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New person on the blogroll

I just stumbled across Monkeygirl at her blog, Musings of a Highly Trained Monkey. She has a terrific post titled Letter to not-sick-man in Bed 1.

If you ever wondered about what drives ER docs/nurses crazy, it's patients like that guy. Or the woman who's there with her 4-year old to have her stitches removed complaining about a three hour wait.

Also, Kim at Emergiblog (another fav blog of mine) has her top 10 things she wants ER patients to know.
